What is Shared Lives?
Offers support to people who need it. Together, share a home, family and community life.
Shared Lives services are designed to create a sense of belonging and community for adults and young people needing long-term support. Each individual is carefully matched with a vetted Shared Lives carer by local schemes, which are operated or commissioned by council’s adult social care services. This allows for a deeply personal care experience where individuals share their carer’s family and community life, creating a home-like environment. With half of the participants living as part of their carer’s household and the other half engaging in day or overnight visits, Shared Lives helps to foster significant personal connections. This model not only enhances social engagement, with 85% reporting improved social lives, but also integrates individuals into their communities, with 89% feeling more involved. The scheme's efficacy is supported by its substantial network of 10,000 carers across the UK, managed through 140 regulated local schemes, and is recognised for its high standards by the Care Quality Commission, which rates the sector as 96% good or outstanding. This approach has proven cost-effective and has the potential to scale, benefiting thousands more across regions.

EHS is passionate about providing our EHS Shared Lives clients with as much independence as possible, enabling them to live a life of their choice. To demonstrate this, our practices reflect the guidance of The Reach Standards across all our care services. The Reach Standards are a set of twelve voluntary standards created by Paradigm, to ensure people are supported to live the life they choose – with the same choices, rights and responsibilities as other citizens. These standards ensure our focus remains on continually delivering a high level of quality support and that there's ongoing dialogue with our tenants in consideration of this.

The Reach Standards are recommended by health and social care regulators and are the most widely recognised standards across the UK in relation to supported living. These standards are even fed into our central records system to ensure discussions with tenants take place and are recorded to enable us to monitor and review progress.

Income Structure
Shared Lives carers are compensated in a unique way that reflects their self-employed status.
Stable Income
As a self-employed Shared Lives carer, you are compensated with a fee rather than a salary or wage.
Fees for Different Services
Long-term care: Weekly fees for someone living with you range from £350 to £650.
Short-term care: Fees are set on a weekly or nightly basis.
Day support: Fees are typically for blocks of time, usually around four hours.
Payment Source
Understanding who pays the fees and how they are funded is crucial for Shared Lives carers.
Who Pays?
Your fees are paid by the local Shared Lives scheme, which is funded by local council or NHS budgets based on the social care assessment of the individual's needs.
Contributions
The person you support contributes to accommodation and living expenses, typically from their housing benefits and other entitlements.
Self-Employment Details
Being self-employed offers flexibility but comes with certain responsibilities.
Flexibility
Being self-employed offers flexibility and allows you to create a living environment that feels more familial.
Registration
You need to register as self-employed with HMRC, which can be done online after approval.
Tax Benefits
Special tax benefits are available to those providing care through Shared Lives schemes.
Qualifying Care Relief
This tax relief means if your income from Shared Lives is below a certain threshold, you owe no Income Tax or Class 4 National Insurance contributions on it.
Thresholds
Fixed amount: Up to £18,140 per household per year.
Per person rate: £450 per week for each person supported, up to three people.
Examples of Tax Relief Application
Practical examples can help illustrate how tax relief might apply in real-life scenarios.
Full Financial Year Example
Susan's Case: With two people supported full-time, Susan earns £33,800. Her qualifying amount for tax relief is £69,940 (Fixed: £18,140 + Weekly: £46,800). As her earnings are below this, she pays no tax or NIC on this income.
Partial Financial Year Example
Adjusted Earnings: If the same arrangement lasted only 6 months, Susan would earn £16,900. Her adjusted qualifying amount would be £32,470 (Fixed: £9,070 + Weekly: £23,400). Since her earnings are still below this threshold, no tax or NIC contributions are required.
